Sippin’ on your Grape Knee-High at the Tatla Lake General Store, you might hear folks reminisce about the old days when it took 14 hours to travel the gravel on the twice-yearly supply run to Williams Lake. Odds are you’d make the trip a little faster these days, though you might have trouble packing 50 pound sacks of flour on your MV Agusta. Remote and lightly traveled, this DH climbs out of Williams Lake, then plunges down and over the Fraser River. It then ascends steeply on a memorable and evenly engineered climb before settling onto the gentler gradients and less predictable pavement of the vast Chilcotin Plateau. Anyone but Max Burns would think twice before toughing it out on the 230-km (140-mi), mostly gravel road between Tatla Lake and coastal Bella Coola. However, local buzz says more pavement is on the way. Maybe next year you’ll be sippin’ your sody-pap in Anahim Lake.
